When your child comes down with the flu, it can feel overwhelming. Here are some practical steps to keep them comfortable, monitor their symptoms, and know when to seek care right away.
Check Fever Regularly
- Take your child’s temperature at least every 4–6 hours while they are sick.
- Use acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Motrin/Advil, for children over 6 months) to help with fever or discomfort—never give aspirin.
When to Be Concerned About Fever
- Fever over 104°F (40°C) at any time.
- A fever that is not decreasing with the use of over-the-counter fever suppressants.
- Fever lasting more than 3 days without improvement.
- Sudden return of fever after it had gone down.
Other Warning Signs to Watch For
- Trouble breathing, wheezing, or fast breathing.
- Severe sore throat, ear pain, or persistent vomiting.
- Signs of dehydration (very few wet diapers, no tears when crying, dry lips).
- Extreme sleepiness, confusion, or difficulty waking up.
When to Seek Care Right Away
Children with the flu should be seen promptly to stop symptoms from getting worse and to protect the rest of the family. Prescription antiviral medications, such as Tamiflu or Xofluza, can shorten illness and may prevent flu from spreading to others at home if given early.
Supporting Recovery at Home
- Encourage rest and extra sleep.
- Offer plenty of fluids (water, electrolyte drinks, broth).
- Keep them home from school or activities until fever-free for at least 24 hours without medicine.
- Update your Medicine Cabinet – check our blog post for our favorite must-haves.
